Below are several videos documenting an installation I created (Honoring Two Corners in Stillness) in November 2021 at Shed Gallery in New Orleans, LA. The work consisted of two high intensity (motion activated) lights which were mounted on the floor and positioned facing the two inside corners of the space. The piece was in honor of my sister (and only sibling) who had pass away just prior to the exhibition. I envisioned the piece as a tribute to her in silence, light and in darkness. For the work, I was interested in placing an emphasis on the duality of the two inside corners of the space - as joined yet separate spaces. The piece was intended to be a rumination on connection two people can have over a lifetime - being separate but bound together - present with each other, yet not present. Additionally, insomuch as this was the maiden show for this particular space, and due to the fact that the space was going to transition into a more conventional looking exhibition space at the end the show, I wanted to also honor the ‘look’ of the space and it’s original function as a simple shed. My intention, in part, was to reveal the space in it’s original form, as a purely functional space, spot-lighting some of it’s beautiful and ephemeral imperfections.
